Emmerdale Farm’s 50th promo spot.

Back when I was a kid, I watched Emmerdale Farm on UK TV and thought it was a load of shit. Who really gave a crap about northerners working on a farm? I didn’t get it. I wasn’t a fan.

I’m not a fan of Coronation Street either. I liked Eastenders for a time and Brookside for the lesbians. I was 16 when the lesbian kiss was aired. All this backstory has little to do with this genius promo. I’m just surprised Emmerdale has lasted fifty years.

The spot celebrates Emmerdale’s longevity and is promoting the hour-long special (this week). It’s a little masterpiece. I love the closing scenes when the figures topple from the cake and the whole world comes crashing down. Beautiful photography. And any ad that brings back Bronski Beat’s Smalltown Boy is good with me.

“Amy Lord, production designer on the project and artistic director of Lord Whitney studio, tells CR: “The actors were captured using 3D-scanning software. The director Matt Rhodes worked with the costume, hair and makeup departments to pose the actors carefully for each scene, making it look as if they were in the midst of a hurricane. This involved their clothes and hair being hung on wires to create the effect, as well as them having to hold some pretty difficult poses.” Source Creative Review.
