Even if we all started from the same position, there would still be those who race ahead (ambition or just smarter at utilising what’s around them). Then there’s human nature to take into account…if we’re all at the same spot, why bother trying? Laziness…or even misfortune…any number of obstacles could happen.

I guess my point is, there IS no magic solution and any utopian fantasy is precisely that…fantasy. Even on a kibbutz (probably the most socialist of environments), there are leaders. While everybody pulls together, it’s enivitable that someone will do more simply because it’s in their nature (or physically bigger or mentally smarter). Positive side to poverty? No, there really isn’t. Would equality sort the issue? I’m afraid human nature will see that dream die pretty fast.
