If it was his decision, then he was poorly advised. I don't believe the wardrobe department saw it and thought, "yeah, that looks nice...no idea if its meant to mean anything but gold bling suits the character." The film is too knowing in its wardrobe selection and has the fashionistas frothing in delight. Every piece of jewellery, every item of clothing, every fabric on show...was selected after careful deliberation...in my opinion.
